Description

A doctoral degree is a prerequisite for appointment in the position of post doctoral research fellow. A Norwegian doctoral degree within applied mathematics or scientific computing and modelling within theoretical physics or chemistry, or an equivalent foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. The successful candidate is expected to devote her/his research time on Multiwavelet algorithms for solving the Kohn-Sham (KS) equation, obtaining the KS-orbitals and their energies in a linearly scaling manner. This problem reduces to the challenge of developing algorithms that only depend linearly on the number of atoms in the system. A breakthrough in this domain will open new paths to the computation of the electronic structure of large molecules. The Multiwavelet group at the CTCC has already implemented linear-scaling methods Poisson and Helmholtz equations which are central in molecular computations with Multiwavelets. The group works in addition on implementing effective algorithms for “Hartee-Fock” exchange. The next step in the development of this general framework for electronic-structure calculations will be the determination of the KS eigenvalues and eigenvectors (orbitals), and this will be the main challenge for the hired postdoc. The ground state of the KS equation can also be formulated as an optimization problem where our integral formulation of the equations offers natural direct minimization and iteration algorithms. Low rank tensor approximation methods is therefore important in our formulation of molecular orbitals and electronic potentials. The applicant must be able to document scientific knowledge in applied mathematics or scientific computing and modelling within theoretical physics or chemistry. The successful applicant must document basic knowledge in chemistry and/or atomic- and molecular physics. The successful applicant must be willing to engage himself/herself in the ongoing development of his/her discipline and the university as a whole. The working time will be set aside for research, research-related activities and research administration. Appointment for more than one fixed term period at the same institution is not permitted. Regulations concerning redundancy pay cannot be included in the fixed term work contract.

Benefits

Remuneration for the position of post doctoral research fellow is in accordance with the State wage scale code 1352. A compulsory contribution of 2 % will be made to the State Pension Fund.
