Lancaster University Department of Biological Sciences
Postdoctoral Research Associate Molecular ecology of African armyworm baculovirus – BBSRC-DFID funded
Post Ref: A969
Closing Date: 23 January 2008
Salary: £23,002 - £32,796
Applications are invited for this exciting research position as part of a collaborative project between institutions in the U.K., Tanzania and Canada, jointly funded by the BBSRC and DFID. The post is for 3 years and will suit a candidate with relevant experience in entomology, insect pathogens and molecular biology, with an interest in evolutionary ecology and developing world issues
This research position gives the post holder the opportunity to work with a large group of stakeholders with a common interest in using an endemic baculovirus as a novel biological control agent against an economically important Lepidopteran crop pest, the African armyworm moth. The research associate will mainly be responsible for the genetic characterisation of different field-collected isolates of Spodoptera exempta nucleopolyhedrovirus, with a view to determining temporal and spatial variation in the population genetic structure. In addition, the successful candidate will conduct a series of laboratory experiments and bioassays with the virus aimed at characterising phenotypic variation in both covert and overt forms of the virus. He/she will also have the opportunity to conduct field studies in East Africa in collaboration with our Tanzania-based partners
The successful applicant will have a PhD or equivalent and relevant experience in molecular biology or a related discipline. It is essential that the candidate has permission to work in the EU, and either has direct experience of working in a molecular biology laboratory or of working with insect microbial disease agents.
Suitable candidates are encouraged to make informal enquires to Dr. Ken Wilson (ken.wilson@lancaster.ac.uk).
