The Bioinformatics Group in the Department of Computer Science at University College London invites applications for a BBSRC funded postdoctoral position to work in the laboratory of Prof. David Jones on developing a new integrated bioinformatics resource which links the CATH database, the Genomic Threading Database (GTD) and the PSIPRED protein structure prediction server. The work will entail development and implementation of new fold recognition methods, Web server development, building of new databases and some Grid computing. This post is part of a joint project with Prof. Christine Orengo in the Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Applicants should have a relevant PhD (e.g. in bioinformatics), and should already have one or more papers accepted in a refereed journal. Good bioinformatics software development skills and familiarity with protein structure data is essential. Knowledge in areas such as database development, the principles of protein structure, and usage of Grid clusters would be advantageous. Fluency in both written and spoken English, along with experience of writing published scientific papers is essential.
Founded in 1973, the Department of Computer Science has internationally leading groups in Networking, Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, Imaging and Virtual Environments. It is an innovative department with 35 faculty members and is located in central London – an ideal environment for young researchers. The Bioinformatics Group also forms the research core of the Bloomsbury Centre for Bioinformatics, which comprises 21 affiliated bioinformatics research groups at UCL and Birkbeck College, and spans a range of departments and fields such as protein structure prediction, genomic and transcriptomic data analysis, statistical genetics and systems biology.
The position is funded for 3 years starting in May 2008. The post is on the UCL Grade 7 scale, the salary for which ranges from £30,115 to £36,429 inclusive p.a. The starting salary for the person appointed will be between £30,115 – £34,489 p.a. including London Allowance and will depend on experience.
