Applicants are invited to contact Dr. Jens C. Rekling in order to apply for a NeuroCluster post. doc. position at the Institute of Neuroscience and Pharmacology. The position is available for one year.
Project title: Neuronal domains in the developing brainstem.
Project description: Columnar domains of spontaneously coactive neurons are present in the developing neocortex. The exact function of these neuronal domains is unknown, but has been hypothesized to be related to organization of cortical microcircuits. The cortical neuronal domains are dependent on gap junction coupling between neurons and cell-to-cell diffusion of IP3 which induce release of calcium from intracellular stores. We have observed domains of spontaneously coactive cells in the developing brainstem. The project aims at uncovering which cell types are participating in the domain activity (glia cells and/or neurons), and to what extent the brainstem domains are similar to the cortical domains. The finding that domains also exist in the brainstem suggests that they could be a manifestation of a more general developmental mechanism in the brain. Experimentally we will investigate domain activity in acute slices of the brainstem and in organotypical slice cultures of the brainstem.
The applicant: We seek a highly motivated scientist with documented research experience. Qualifications for the positions must include: relevant university education and PhD degree, solid background in research, preferably with neuroscience experience, - advanced computer skills
