Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral position in the London Centre for Nanotechnology (LCN), in the area of cell and developmental biology. The aim of the project is to study the biophysics of cell sheet invagination using an in vitro system based on microfluidic devices and long term optical microscopy. Microfluidic devices will be made in the LCN clean-room for cell culture and utilised to force expression of gene constructs in a stripe of cells in a monolayer growing in the device. Candidate genes will be expressed and their ability to induce cell sheet invagination will be assessed using confocal microscopy. Once genes that induce invagination have been identified, the biophysical mechanisms giving rise to cell sheet invagination will be investigated. The candidate will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues within LCN and UCL.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant area of biophysics, or cell and molecular biology. A strong background in molecular biology, establishment of stable inducible cell lines, and confocal microscopy is desired. Additional experience in any of the following areas will be an advantage photolithography, long term imaging, epithelial biology, cell biophysics, generation of retroviral constructs. The position will be for three years starting 15 September 2008. Appointment will be made with a salary of £27,466 plus a London allowance of £2,649.
