Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Assistant
& Graduate student scholarship in Memory impairment in Alzheimer disease
UCD School of Biomedical & Biomolecular Sciences
UCD Conway Institute (http://www.ucd.ie/conway)
Applications are invited from qualified individuals to join a multidisciplinary team of scientists studying the molecular bases of memory impairment in Alzheimer disease (AD). There are two positions available. The first is for a post-doctoral fellow or research assistant (salary: €22,552 -37,041) and requires experience in rodent husbandry and behavioral testing. The successful candidate will be responsible for behavioral analysis of an animal model which exhibits certain aspects of AD and will work as part of a multidisciplinary team looking at synaptic ultrastructure and disease-associated transcriptional dysregulation. The second position is for a graduate student committed to pursuing a PhD by research on the biochemistry of A? oligomers. The scholarship will pay full tuition fees and will provide a generous stipend.
Extensive genetic, biochemical and animal modeling data support a central role for the amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) in AD, however, the mechanism of how Abeta exerts its effects is not known. Understanding the molecular basis of how Abeta disrupts memory processes is likely to identify key pathogenic events, which could then be specifically targeted for therapeutic intervention and is the focus of our research. Informal enquires should be directed to Prof. Dominic Walsh (dominic.walsh@ucd.ie).
