GMIT continues to increase its research activity and following the award of recent research contracts, it is pleased to invite applications for the following research projects:
Job Title : Postdoctoral Research Officer (3 Year Fixed Term)
Project Title: Research for Sustainable Management of Commercial Fisheries: an Ecosystem Approach
Funding Agency: Department of Education, Technological Sector Research Program, Strand III
Description: Current marine policy and legislation call for the adoption of an ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management. This requires an increased understanding of the interactions within marine ecosystems and the interdependent effects of environmental variation and anthropogenic impacts.
The Commercial Fisheries Research Group at GMIT conducts research to support the sustainable management of commercial fisheries. The issues addressed in current projects include population dynamics, stock structure and early life history processes. The group is recruiting a post-doctoral scientist to expand these research activities to investigate ecosystem functioning, food-web dynamics and the impact of human activities on community dynamics, with particular reference to coastal flatfish nursery areas. The ultimate aim of this expansion is to increase the group’s capacity to support ecosystem-based fisheries management.
Requirements/Background: The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant topic. Numerical competency and experience in trophic or ecosystem modelling would be advantageous. A strong publication record will also be viewed favourably. The person should be highly motivated with a desire to drive and develop their own research ideas.
