We invite applications for a
PostDoc position in Theoretical Physics / Chemistry
performing research in theoretical NEXAFS spectroscopy
The position will be assigned to subproject B3 (W. Kuch / Theory: K. Hermann) inside the Collaborative Research Center (Sonderforschungsbereich) 658 “Fundamental processes in molecular switches at surfaces”, see also http://www.physik.fu-berlin.de/en/einrichtungen/sfb/sfb658/index.html .
The work concerns simulations of x-ray absorption and photoelectron emission spectra of adsorbed molecules using density functional theory and local cluster models (cluster code StoBe) where the theoretical spectra will assist the interpretation of experimental data obtained in the subproject. Further, program development towards the application to core excitations at heavy atom centers (including spin-orbit coupling) is to be performed. The theoretical project will be carried out in collaboration with Prof. K. Hermann (Fritz-Haber-Institute Berlin). The work is of great technological interest and skills gained in the project, e.g. advanced computational methods and spectroscopy, can be important assets in applications for subsequent professional positions.
The successful candidate must have a PhD degree in physics or chemistry or equivalent (with emphasis on theory). Apart from excellent knowledge of theoretical and computational methods as basic requirements, experience in one or more of the following fields is of advantage: quantum chemistry, theoretical spectroscopy, relativistic quantum mechanics, programming and numerical work in large computer clusters. The motivated candidate should be able to work independently as well as in a small team interacting both with theoretical and experimental groups.
The position will be paid according to the German government scheme (BAT IIa level) and will be open starting in February 2011 for one year with a possible extension of up to one year depending on performance. Women are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with a disability are given preference in case of equal qualification.
