The University of California, at Irvine Department of Developmental & Cell Biology Postdoctoral Researcher
A postdoctoral position is available to study molecular mechanisms of pancreas development and regeneration. A central part of this research includes experiments directed to understand the role of transcription factors and signaling molecules in the specification and function of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The Department of Developmental & Cell Biology at the University of California, at Irvine (http://devcell.bio.uci.edu) has state of the art facilities and includes over 30 highly interactive groups studying various aspects of developmental biology and diabetes.
The laboratory has recently identified a molecular pathway that maintains stem/progenitor cells in the embryonic pancreas (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA (2007) 104: 1865-1870). A central goal of our research is to define whether pluripotential stem/progenitor cells persist in the adult pancreas and whether such cells can replenish lost tissue during pancreas regeneration. Additional projects include characterization of pancreas development and function in mice carrying targeted mutations in transcription factors, identification of their target genes, and in vitro experiments to understand transcription factor function.
Previous work in mouse developmental biology is not required, but experience in the areas of developmental biology, mouse genetics, transcriptional regulation or cell signaling would be advantageous
