Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, funded by Science Foundation Ireland, in the laboratory of Prof. Suzi Jarvis located in the UCD Conway Institute for Biomolecular and Biomedical Research, University College Dublin.

This is a biodiscovery project investigating nature’s widespread use of physiological amyloid for mechanical strength in natural materials (see e.g. Nanotechnology, 18, 044010 (2007)). It will involve applying a range of experimental techniques to establish the physical and biochemical characteristics of physiological amyloid. It will involve working with a range of organisms in order to build up a strategy for biomimicry. A broad scientific interest across multiple disciplines is essential.

The applicant should hold a PhD or have submitted their PhD thesis in a cross- disciplinary field prior to taking up the appointment. The applicant must have demonstrated skills with a range of experimental techniques and will have a particular motivation to work as part of a multidisciplinary research team. The applicant will be expected to help maintain ongoing local and international collaborations and provide day-to-day supervision of a graduate student. Salary will be internationally competitive, commensurate with skills and experience and in the range €35-45K . The post is available from 1st May 2008 for a period of up to three years.
