The Centre for Climate & Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS) in NUI Galway’s Environmental Change Institute focuses on the impact of atmospheric composition on climate change and air pollution. Research activities include atmospheric chemistry, air-sea exchange of aerosols and gases, ocean acidification, aerosol formation and transformation, aerosol-cloud-climate interactions, air-quality and health, ocean dynamics and climate change. Researchers at C-CAPS collaborate with the Martin Ryan Institute for Marine Research and the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at NUI Galway, facilitating large-scale research in physical, chemical and biological oceanography. Facilities include the GAW/EMEP supersite at Mace Head and a wide range of state of the art equipment.

The research will focus on building the capacity to measuring carbonate parameters in seawater in an Irish context, and will be based in the Martin Ryan Institute for Marine Research at NUI, Galway. Principal tasks will include commissioning of an instrument for the measurement of total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon in seawater, leading the collection and analysis of seawater samples using the Irish Marine Institute’s purpose-built research vessels Celtic Voyager and Celtic Explorer, establishing the first baseline dataset for carbonate parameters in Irish marine waters, and helping to develop a science plan for long-term monitoring of carbonate parameters in Irish waters. The research post is initially funded until 31st December 2009 and an early start date is desirable.

Requirements:
We seek an early-stage postdoctoral researcher with experience in the measurement of carbonate parameters in seawater. Experience of carrying out research at sea is desirable.

Salary scale: €40,578 – 42,525, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
