Post Doctoral Research Fellow in Molecular Cell Biology (Stem Cell Biology)

A Post Doctoral Research Fellow is required to work within the group of Dr. Franchesca Houghton investigating aspects of human embryonic stem (hES) cell biology within the Centre for Human Development, Stem Cells & Regeneration in the Division of Human Genetics at the University of Southampton.
This is an exciting project, funded by the MRC for 36 months. It aims to investigate the role of nitric oxide in the maintenance and differentiation of hES cells. It builds on our previous data linking nitric oxide to the metabolic and differentiation status of cells in the preimplantation embryo (Manser et al. (2004) Biol. Reprod. 71: 528-533; Manser & Houghton (2006) J. Cell Sci. 119: 2048-2055).
You will work alongside other researchers (currently ~15-20 people) in the Centre studying different aspects of normal and abnormal human development and hES cell biology. This self-contained unit provides state-of-the-art facilities and includes laboratories equipped for tissue culture, biochemistry, molecular biology, HFEA human embryo culture, microscopy, microarray and facilities for cytogenetic analysis. The Centre is very supportive of ambitious researchers with several current members having acquired independent Fellowships. The Human Genetics Division was rated 5 in the last RAE (2001) within the School of Medicine at the University of Southampton.
A PhD and molecular or cellular biological laboratory experience are essential. Previous experience of the required methodology (e.g. hES cell culture, Western blotting, FACs analysis, cloning, RNAi, and QRT-PCR) would be highly desirable but not essential.
