Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard/MGH Center on Genomics, Vulnerable Populations, and Health Disparities: 2-year Post-doctoral fellowship in Genetics-focused Health Policy Research

The Harvard/MGH Center on Genomics, Vulnerable Populations, and Health Disparities (Alexandra E. Shields, PhD, Director) invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship position from individuals holding a Ph.D. in health services research, health policy, bioethics, or related field interested in pursuing research related to translating genetics research into clinical practice, improved public health, and reduced health disparities. Research interests may address research design (e.g., use of race constructs in genomics research, conceptualization of the environment in gene-environment interaction research), clinical integration (e.g. issues related to provider readiness, consumer willingness to under genetic testing, financing and coverage), or the impact of genetically-tailored treatment and prevention on health outcomes and health disparities.

The Fellow will also gain experience directing an NIH-funded study of lay attitudes and beliefs regarding the role of genetics in addiction, and smokers’ willingness to undergo genetic testing in order to receive tailored smoking cessation treatment (approximately 2 days per week). Fellows will be involved in the analysis and publication of empirical research papers stemming from these and other activities. Fellows will receive mentoring and support in building on this experience to develop new research projects and to secure independent research funding (e.g. NIH K–award). Successful post-docs will be considered for a tenure track position.

Post-doctoral fellows have the opportunity to participate in grant writing, weekly research meetings, and training seminars. Fellows are afforded broad access to the rich intellectual and physical resources of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Partners HealthCare, The Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, and Harvard University.

Interested candidates should send letter of interest, CV, and letter of recommendation to Emily Youatt (eyouatt@partners.org). Applications will be accepted immediately and will continue to be considered until the position is filled.

Start date: September 2008

Stipend: $47,000 plus generous benefits and a travel stipend.
