RNA processing by a protein-assisted eukaryotic ribozyme
£27,466 p.a.
Working within the groups of Drs Johanna Avis and Josip Lovric, you will study a non-coding RNA (a functional ribozyme) that cleaves a number of RNA substrates. In particular, you will assemble and characterise ribonucleoprotein complexes in order to assess the role and importance of protein assistants in substrate recognition and cleavage. The project extends our previous work on this ribozyme and the closely related RNase P and represents an essential move into detailed structure-function analysis, encompassing state-of-the-art biochemical, biophysical and analytical techniques.
You will have (or expect to hold shortly) a PhD in a relevant subject and a strong background in molecular biology/biochemistry/ biophysics. Experience in working with macromolecular assemblies or structured non-coding RNAs is desirable
Funded by the BBSRC, this position is tenable for three years, available from July 2008.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Johanna Avis on +44 (0) 161 306 4216 or email: J.Avis@manchester.ac.uk
Application forms and further particulars are available from our website or by contacting +44 (0) 161 275 8836 or email: Lifesciences-hr@manchester.ac.uk quoting the reference number.
Closing date: 6 June 2008.
