Nanophotonics for Terabit Communications (NATEC)

Villum Kann Rasmussen Fonden has recently awarded 25 million kroner to a new Centre of Excellence, NATEC, to perform fundamental research on nanophotonics for terabit communications. In this connection we have a number of openings for postdoctoral and PhD candidates wishing to work in a rapidly evolving area of science and technology, with access to the newest equipment and in an intellectually stimulating atmosphere of highly reputed research groups.

The NATEC Centre will, in particular, perform research on light-matter interaction in semiconductor quantum dots and photonic crystal structures and explore the use of such nanostructured materials for realizing photonic chips operating in the terabit regime. The Centre is a strongly focused effort involving nanofabrication, experimental characterisation based on nanoscopy and ultrafast lasers, fundamental theory including topology optimization, and systems experiments and will provide ample opportunities for cross-fertilization between these areas.

The NATEC Centre is headed by Professor Jesper Mørk (jm@com.dtu.dk) from Department of Photonics Engineering, DTU, and involves the collaboration with 4 other institutes at DTU: Dept. of Micro- and Nanotechnology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Center for Electron Nanoscopy and Danchip.

At the moment we have openings within the following areas of research:

Growth of semiconductor quantum dots and their characterisation using high resolution nanoscopy. Fabrication of membrane structures with photonic crystal waveguides and cavities. Contact: Kresten Yvind (ky@com.dtu.dk).

Experimental characterisation of pulse propagation in photonic crystal structures and ultrafast dynamics in quantum dots based on femtosecond lasers. Contact: Mike van der Poel (mvp@com.dtu.dk).

Theory and modelling of light-matter interaction and pulse propagation in passive photonic crystal structures and waveguides incorporating quantum dots. Contact: Niels Asger Mortensen (nam@mic.dtu.dk).

Topology optimization of nanophotonic structures incorporating the effects of nonlinearities and fabrication uncertainties. Contact: Ole Sigmund (sigmund@mek.dtu.dk)

Fundamental investigations of terabit systems based on nanostructures, with special emphasis on the identification of (quantum) noise limitations and information capacity. Contact: Palle Jeppesen (pj@com.dtu.dk).

Depending on the background of the candidates, these areas may be filled by either 3-year PhD scholarships or 2-year postdoctoral positions. Candidates should have a master’s or PhD degree in engineering, physics or applied mathematics. We emphasize candidates with a strong track record and with a good experimental, theoretical and/or computational background in photonics, electromagnetics or materials engineering and physics.

Postdoc positions

The salary and appointment terms for postdocs are negotiated in accordance with the current collective agreement for Danish University faculty members. At the moment, the annual salary of a postdoctoral candidate is approximately 360,000 DKK (48,000 EUR) + pension.

PhD Scholarships

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the successful candidates will be enrolled as PhD students at the Technical University of Denmark. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, which may be obtained from the PhD programme office at tel: 45 4525 1176 or +45 4525 1177 or from the homepage of DTU: www.dtu.dk.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. At the moment, the annual salary of a PhD student is approximately 277,000 DKK (36,900 EUR) pension.
