You will carry out and publish research findings relative to Virology, in particular Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV) and to contribute to the knowledge, understanding and skills of other individuals within the Neurovirology group such as postgraduate students, less experienced research assistants, technicians and undergraduate students.
Information regarding project:
1) The laboratory research work of this project will be carried out in newly refurbished facilities at the University of Glasgow Institute of Comparative Medicine at the Veterinary School Campus, Garscube Estate, Bearsden where Prof Kennedy’s laboratory group has recently re-located.
2) The first year of the post will involve completing a current CSO funded project which is comparing the transcriptional profiles using long oligonucleotide microarrays of VZV isolates obtained from patients with herpes zoster who have or have not developed post-herpetic neuralgia. This project involves close collaboration with the Division of Pathway Medicine in Edinburgh.
3) The work of this post will also involve completion of a detailed molecular study looking at the full range of viral gene expression in human peripheral ganglia.
4) For the second year of the post the work will continue to be focussed on VZV, with a likely emphasis on the differing phenotypes of different human VZV isolates. The exact direction of the work will be decided by the PI and will be primarily determined by the particular new projects that have been funded.
