Optimising reconstruction to accommodate complex system models for SPECT.

We seek enthusiastic research-oriented scientists to join an EPSRC funded multidisciplinary project on the optimisation of reconstruction algorithms and system design for single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).

a) One scientist will work closely with CMIC and the Department of Computer Science on development of novel reconstruction algorithms that specifically exploit the use of accelerated graphics hardware.

b) One scientist will join a team at INM to explore the potential extension of physical models for SPECT that can capture multispectral information and extend on current approaches to optimising image reconstruction.

c) Two PhD students will work closely with the above scientists on specific aspects of the project.

Applicants should have an honours degree (first or upper second) in computer science, physics, engineering or related discipline. Candidates for the Research Associate positions must also have a PhD, preferably on a topic related to medical imaging and with previous experience in medical image processing and/or solution of inverse problems. Proven capability for independent research and strong computer skills are essential.

Both research groups at INM and CMIC are internationally recognised for their research output. INM is well equipped with state-of-the-art imaging equipment and is located in the new University College Hospital. CMIC is located in the main UCL campus nearby. The positions offer considerable scope for personal development. UCL is an equal opportunities employer.

The Research Associate positions are offered initially for a period of two years (extendable to three years), with starting salary dependent on previous experience in the range £28,839 – £35,469 (spine points 29-36), plus London Allowance of £2,781. PhD candidates (EU and UK residents only) will receive an annual stipend of £14,600 per annum and full fees.

Application packs including further details are available from R. Gaston, Centre for Medical Image Computing, The Malet Place Engineering Building, UCL, London WC1E 6BT, email: r.gaston@ucl.ac.uk

Closing date: 15th January 2009.
