Within the DFG Forschergruppe “Post-Genomic Strategies for New Antibiotic Drugs and Tagets” two positions for PhD students (group of Prof. Piel) and one position for a postdoctoral fellow (group of Prof. König) are available.
New antibiotics are urgently needed. Judging from previous experience, the secondary metabolism of bacteria is a most likely source of such compounds. The objective of our projects is thus to investigate promising new antibiotic compounds (hormaomycin, corallopyronin) derived from bacteria, using genomic approaches. It is proposed to investigate in detail at the genetic and biochemical level the question how antibiotics are made by their producers and how new antibiotics can be generated through engineering of biosynthetic pathways and mutasynthesis.
We search for candidates with experience (Postdoc) and/or interest (PhD positions) in
techniques in molecular biology (PCR, blots, library construction, expressions, etc.)
pathways of secondary metabolism
bioinformatics
microbiology (culturing, extraction, upscaling, etc.)
- analytical chemistry and structural characterization of natural products
Please contact Prof. Jörn Piel (joern.piel@uni-bonn.de) or Prof. Gabriele König (g.koenig@uni-bonn.de) if you are interested.
