A British Heart Foundation Programme Grant awarded to Prof. Nick Standen, Prof. John Challiss, Dr Noel Davies and Dr Jon Willets to investigate the regulation of Kv potassium channels in arterial smooth muscle by vasoactive agents and glucose is currently running. We wish to employ a postdoctoral research associate to cover maternity leave for one year. The successful applicant will become part of a multidisciplinary team utilizing a variety of electrophysiological, single-cell live imaging and biochemical/molecular biological approaches to study the role of these important ion channels in vascular smooth muscle physiology and pathophysiology.

The post-holder will have (or expect soon to gain) a PhD and preferably possess research experience applying electrophysiological methods to native cell preparations. Principal duties will be to contribute to the programme with respect to Kv recording and the study of how vasodilators, vasoconstrictors, and/or glucose affect channel activity. Another important role will be to interact with other members of the research team to integrate electrophysiological findings with biochemical/molecular biological and myography work.

This research programme is taking place in new, purpose-built laboratories in the Henry Wellcome Building within the Department of Cell Physiology and Pharmacology, and the successful applicants will join an active research community working on cardiovascular ion channels and cellular signalling.
