英国桑格研究所招聘计算基因组学博士后

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

The vertebrate annotation group at the Sanger institute leads the world in the definition of genesets, particular human and is the lead institute in the Gencode consortium of the NIH funded ENCODE project. There is now a the flood of transcriptomics data from next generation sequencing and genome variation data from the 1000 genomes project, making this an exciting time for data analysis. This is an unique opportunity for a postdoc to be involved in many aspects of genome analysis including using genomic data to answer complex biological questions investigating splicing, factors influences coding potential and analysis of alternative start signals etc. There is the potential to also be involved in a high profile project evaluation of different transcriptomics predictions using next generation sequence data, modelled on the successful EGASP experiment. This post is ideal for an individual who can work independently carry out computational scientific analysis of data related to human, mouse and zebrafish genome annotation projects to produce publications.

Essential Skills

PhD degree which includes a substantial component in bioinformatics or computer science (or equivalent experience)

Substantial experience in the analysis and manipulation of large datasets, such as accessing data via MySQL or commonly used bioinformatics APIs, such as Ensembl, bioperl or biojava.

Proven record of writing analysis programs and scripts to rapidly investigate scientific questions.

Ability to work independently to carry out data analysis

- Excellent attention to detail and good communication skills.

Ideal Skills

- Experience in comparative genome analysis, phylogenetic analysis, protein domain analysis would be an asset.

Other information

The Sanger Institute operates at the forefront of genomics, sequencing and analyzing a wide range of genomes from single-cell pathogens to higher vertebrates. The Institute’s emphasis is on genomes relevant to human medicine and welfare: from malaria causing pathogens to the Thousand Genomes project, the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium and the Cancer Genome project. The Institute recently received significant funding from the US NIH to expand the ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements (ENCODE) project to the entire human genome. In its pilot phase the ENCODE project yielded provocative new insights into the functional elements and their organization within the human genome.
